Top Halal Food Spots To Eat At In Zanzibar, Tanzania

Hey there, food enthusiasts and travel junkies! If you’re a lover of pristine beaches, rich cultures, and, of course, mouthwatering halal cuisines, Zanzibar is the place to be. Nestled in the warm embrace of the Indian Ocean, this island paradise not only boasts breathtaking landscapes but also offers a delightful blend of flavours that cater to the discerning taste buds of Muslim travellers. So, fasten your seatbelts as we take you on a conversational journey through the heart of Zanzibar, exploring the top halal food spots to eat at in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

1. Zanzibar Island: A Taste of Paradise

Picture this – powdery white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and an abundance of sunshine. Zanzibar Island, situated off the east coast of Africa, is a halal culinary haven. With a sizable Muslim population, you can bet your biryani that this place has some serious halal food game. The cost of food is cheap if you live in countries like the UK/US too; for a mid-range restaurant for one person it can cost usually between £10-20 to have a 3-course meal and it’s even cheaper if you go somewhere more local!

2. Stone Town: Where UNESCO Meets Gastronomy

Now, let’s talk about Stone Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s not just a feast for your Instagram but also a treasure trove of halal culinary delights. The narrow winding streets, historic buildings, and vibrant markets in the city centre are home to a range of halal restaurants, making it the perfect spot for Muslim travellers seeking a tasty adventure.

3. Darajani Market: A Culinary Extravaganza

For a true taste of local Zanzibari flavours, Darajani Market is your go-to. Dive into the hustle and bustle of this central market in Stone Town, offering everything from succulent meat dishes to refreshing fresh juices. It’s a melting pot of authentic halal goodness, and you wouldn’t want to miss it.

Below are some street foods to try:

  • Zanzibar Pizza (aka Tanzanian Pizza):
    • Picture a thin, crispy dough filled with a variety of delicious ingredients such as minced meat, vegetables, and eggs. Cooked on a griddle, Zanzibar pizza is a local favourite and a must-try street food.
  • Octopus Curry:
    • Zanzibar’s coastal location means an abundance of fresh seafood. Octopus curry, with its aromatic spices and tender octopus, is a popular and flavorful street food choice. Often served with rice or chapati, it’s a seafood lover’s dream.
  • Mishkaki (Grilled Meat Skewers):
    • For meat enthusiasts, mishkaki is a delight. These skewers of marinated and grilled meat, often served with a side of spicy sauce, are a common sight at street food stalls. Whether it’s beef, chicken, or goat, mishkaki offers a burst of flavour in every bite.
  • Zanzibar Mix:
    • As the name suggests, Zanzibar Mix is a delicious blend of different local dishes served together. It typically includes pilau rice, meat stews, and sides like coconut bean soup. It’s a hearty and satisfying option for those looking to sample a bit of everything.
  • Urojo (Zanzibar Mix Soup):
    • Urojo, also known as Zanzibar Mix Soup, is a spicy and tangy soup that incorporates a variety of ingredients, such as lentils, potatoes, and fried pastries. Topped with a squeeze of lime and crispy garnishes, it’s a flavourful street food experience.
  • Sugar Cane Juice:
    • Beat the tropical heat with a refreshing glass of sugar cane juice. Freshly squeezed on the spot, this sweet and hydrating drink is a popular choice among locals and visitors alike.
  • Mandazi:
    • Similar to a doughnut, mandazi is a deep-fried pastry with a slightly crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior. It’s a sweet and satisfying snack that’s perfect for a quick energy boost while exploring the streets of Zanzibar.
  • Coconut and Cassava Delights:
    • Keep an eye out for vendors selling coconut and cassava-based snacks. From coconut samosas to cassava crisps, these street treats offer a delightful combination of textures and flavours.
  • Zanzibar Shawarma:
    • Zanzibar’s take on the classic Middle Eastern shawarma is not to be missed. Succulent grilled meat, fresh veggies, and flavourful sauces wrapped in flatbread create a mouthwatering portable meal.
  • Fried Plantains (viazi karai):
    • Indulge your sweet tooth with fried plantains, locally known as viazi karai. These crispy and caramelised delights are a popular snack, offering a perfect balance of sweetness and crunch.

4. Emerson Spice Tea House Restaurant: Dining with a View

Perched on the rooftop of a historic building, the Emerson Spice Tea House Restaurant not only serves up delicious halal food but also treats you to panoramic views of Stone Town. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience. Perfect for Muslim-friendly honeymooners or anyone wanting a romantic atmosphere to savour Zanzibar’s culinary delights.

5. House of Wonders: Where History Meets Halal

Ever dined in a historic building? Now’s your chance. The House of Wonders is not just an architectural marvel but also home to a fine dining restaurant. Imagine relishing diverse halal dishes while soaking in the rich cultural heritage of Zanzibar. It’s a win-win for your taste buds and your cultural curiosity.

6. Zanzibar Coffee House: A Blend of History and Flavours

Right in the heart of Stone Town, Zanzibar Coffee House offers more than just a cup of joe. This boutique hotel has a rich history, live entertainment, and a menu catering to local and international halal cravings. It’s not just a meal; it’s a symphony of flavours in a cultural haven.

7. Jozani Forest: Nature’s Halal Buffet

If you’re a nature lover, Jozani Forest is where you want to be. This lush green paradise isn’t just about wildlife; it’s also about halal dining in nature. Imagine enjoying your meal surrounded by the sounds of the forest – a unique experience that blends Zanzibar’s natural wonders with its culinary offerings. An example of a great restaurant to visit after walking around Jozani Forest is Jozani Maridadi Restaurant, which serves delicious authentic food at a good price. The restuarant is a little difficult to find at first but is definately worth visiting and for me is one of the top halal food spots to eat at in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

8. The Rock Restaurant: Dining on a Large Rock

Yes, you read that right. The Rock Restaurant sits proudly on a large rock in the Indian Ocean, offering panoramic views that are nothing short of magical. Dive into halal seafood dishes prepared with the freshest raw materials, all while perched on a large rock in the middle of the ocean. Talk about an unforgettable dining experience!

9. Zanzi Resort: Halal-Friendly Luxury

If you’re looking for a touch of luxury with a side of halal, Zanzi Resort on the west coast of Unguja Island is your spot. Private villas, a private beach, and top-notch halal services make it an ideal choice for a halal honeymoon or a laid-back getaway.

10. The Beach House Restaurant on Shangani Street

A beautiful location to sit and eat as you look out onto the warm ocean waters. This is one of the more scenic restaurants so if you enjoy food with a view, then this is a great spot to visit in Zanzibar city. Service was great, and in terms of food choice, from what I remember, they do serve international cuisine (I personally loved the tuna steak and fish curry).

11. The Lebanese Cuisine On Kendwa Beach

Serving delicious Lebanese cuisine, this is the spot to visit for all meat lovers. The chef is Lebanese and there is a variety of delicious food on offer here to fill your stomachs! So if you do like the sound of Arabic music, along with fresh food, before you have a stroll along the white sand beaches of Kendwa Beach, then this is the perfect place for you to visit if you are planning on visiting places outside Zanzibar town.

12. Hilal Burger

You guessed it, they serve burgers! Delicious, highly rated fresh halal burger choices to choose from; again, this is conveniently located near a beach spot (Baraka Beach) that you should be able to visit after enjoying a meal here. I believe they also close late at around 1 am in case you decide to go for a late evening meal too but we went during the daytime.

Halal Certification Process: Because Authenticity Matters

Worried about the authenticity of your halal meal? Fear not! Many restaurants in Zanzibar go through a rigorous halal certification process. So, when you see that certification proudly displayed, you can dig into your dish with confidence. But even if signs are not clearly displayed, Zanzibar is a Muslim majority island (99% of the population are Muslim) so it is unlikely to find a restaurant that does not serve halal food options so I wouldn’t worry too much about this.

Conclusion: Eat, Explore, Enjoy

So, there you have it – a taste of Zanzibar, where every meal is a celebration of flavours, culture, and history. Whether you’re a foodie, a beach lover, or a history buff, Zanzibar has something for everyone. Pack your bags, bring your appetite, and get ready for a culinary journey like no other in this Indian Ocean paradise. Zanzibar awaits – let the feasting begin!
