I personally prefer staying on Livadhi beach as it is away from the hustle and bustle of Himare’s main town centre, which can sometimes get busy. Livadhi beach is better in terms of it being less crowded and having several bars to relax on and get drinks, and it’s also like a 35-minute hike to Aquarium beach which is another must visit beach location.

Practical Information

Getting There

The closest airport to Himare is in Tirana, with public transport options available or the option to rent a car. Google Maps is your best friend for navigating the main road and finding the easiest way to your destination. The drive from Tirana to Himare takes about four hours, passing through picturesque landscapes and along the scenic coastal road.

We arrived in Sarande by flying from the UK to Corfu, Greece and then getting the 30-minute fast ferry across to Saranda and then renting a car to Himare, which took 1hr 30 minutes along the beautiful mountain and coastal roads. I preferred this option as we wanted to head back to Saranda after and explore Ksamil in the south and Girokaster, where Saranda was a good base from which to stay and visit these other places.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Himare is during the summer months, particularly in peak season when the weather is perfect for beach activities and outdoor adventures. However, visiting in the shoulder seasons can offer better options for those looking to avoid the high season crowds. The months of May, June, September, and October are ideal for enjoying pleasant weather and fewer tourists.
