Best Things to do in Singapore (a Travel Guide)
A country bursting with modern architecture, different cultures, and some of the best food you can eat, Singapore is the place to visit if you are travelling to South East Asia. Here are the best things to do in Singapore (a Travel Guide) if you are planning a visit.
1| Gardens By The Bay
One of the best places people think of when they come for a Singapore holiday, Gardens by the Bay, is a nature lover’s paradise, and you can easily spend most of a full day here. Offering three water waterfront gardens situated at the heart of downtown Singapore-Marina Bay, it is a great way to spend the day walking around and viewing an incredible display of plant life at the Singapore botanical gardens.
There are four main things to see within the area. The first is the flower dome, a great place which hosts plants and flowers from around the world. From giant African Baobab trees and one thousand-year-old olive trees to beautiful flower beds and orchids, this is a memorable place to walk around. The second place would be Floral Fantasy which comprises of an artistic display of bouquets and flowers, which provides a magical feel to the place. The third place and final conservatory would be Cloud Forest, my favourite of the three. The cloud forest contained a beautiful towering waterfall dropping over stunning vegetation. The plant life consists of mosses, ferns, and carnivorous plants like Venus fly traps. The added mist that comes about every couple of hours to reflect conditions similar to a cloud mountain gives off a feeling that you are walking around on an alien plant world.
The Supergrove Tree is the fourth activity to see and is a place to go to at night when the light show is on. Each night there is usually a different theme that is displayed. It is a fantastic way to end the night. To sit around the Supergrove Trees and watch the light display is incredible. You can also pay a small fee to take the lift to the top of the Supergrove Tree and walk around to see the panoramic views of the light display from above and get an overall clearer view of the garden at night and the famous luxury hotel known as Marina Sands hotel in the distance. You can also walk around the gardens and view well-known landmarks like the Singapore Flyer, a giant Ferris wheel which offers views of the tallest buildings in Singapore as well as the lush vegetation of the botanical gardens and is one of the top things to do in Singapore.
2| Art Science Museum
When art meets science, this museum, situated in downtown Singapore, will amaze you even when you look at the lotus-shaped building itself. You will have a unique experience, and It is a popular tourist attraction for those who love futuristic artwork or are even curious about what this involves if they have not seen such work before. It is also a great day to go with children if you visit Singapore with family, as they have art for both adults and interactive artwork for children. It cost me 21 Singapore dollars for general admission.
The artwork is truly beautiful and conveys vivid stories. The work is presented through digital artwork, VR simulations and even interactive pieces where you can create your own artwork for others to see, which is one of the many fun things children and adults can enjoy at this museum. I have visited Singapore twice and went back here twice because I loved it so much. There were different themes, but one piece, which was kept the same and is still very popular amongst those who visit, was called the Crystal Universe, an interactive art display where you walk through a display of around 178,000 LED lights that change colour. You will feel as though you are walking through space, surrounded by billions of stars. Again, this is a fun must-activity to do during the Singapore holiday if you want to have a good time and is one of the Singapore attractions on offer.
3| HSBC Rain Vortex
As soon as you land at Singapore Changi Airport, you will be welcomed by the beauty of this 1.7 billion dollar airport. There is a reason this airport is known to be one of the top-rated airports in the world, and the HSBC Rain Vortex is one of the reasons why. This waterfall feature which drops from 40 feet, is an eye-catching display which gives you a taste of what Singapore has to offer. It is the best place to shop and wait if you are at the airport, as there is an abundance of activities to do there.
One of the tallest indoor waterfalls, this vortex is transformed into a dazzling light and sound show by night. You will be able to view this display for free. You can walk and view this display at different floor levels. There is tons to do around this piece of art as the airport also contains a large array of different shops and activities, including its own cinema, a butterfly garden, the Manulife Sky Nets (a fun-filled activity with adults and children where you can bounce around a giant net installation at the airport), and the list never ends. I honestly didn’t think I’d ever advise going to the actual main airport of a city to have fun, but Singapore Changi is on another level in terms of the entertainment and activities it offers, so don’t miss out on this opportunity during the Singapore holiday.
4| Hawker Centre and Cafe’s
A place where you see communities coming together, the Hawker Centres are an indispensable part of life in Singapore and are a must place to visit. There are many Hawker centres scattered throughout the city. I personally visited the Maxwell Hawker Centre in Chinatown and the food centre on Old Airport Road. Newton Food Centre and the less well-known but equally as good Redhill Food Centre are also recommended to try if you want to get a taste of a variety of delicious street food.
You will see plenty of stalls selling a mixture of local Chinese, Indian, and Malay food. You will often see separate stalls for fresh pressed juices and dessert stalls, so you will definitely satisfy any cravings you may have by visiting one of the many Hawker Centres in Singapore. The best thing about this is that it’s all at very affordable prices, so even if you are on a budget, you will find this place to be a delight for both your tastebuds and your wallet!
5| Kampong Glam
Kampong Glam, or the Muslim Quarter of Singapore, is centred on bustling Arab Street. The 19th-century shophouses there have been transformed into textile shops and laid-back eateries serving spicy Malay and international cuisine. Here, notable sites include the Malay Heritage Centre, which features local historical displays, and the golden-domed Sultan Mosque, a main attraction in this area. Haji Lane is lined with fashionable cafes, colourful street art, and clothing businesses to explore and it is the best way to experience this area.
There is so much to do in Singapore, even beyond the top five; whether you are a foodie, love to learn about different cultures, or are a beach lover, Singapore has something for everyone so that you won’t be disappointed!
